  • Stuart Semple in the Press

Fabien Castanier Gallery would like to thank It’s Nice That for featuring Stuart Semple’s recent interview about his artwork and involvement with various charities focused on mental health.
The proceeds from Semple’s “MY SONIC YOUTH” soundtrack will go to support CALM (campaign against living miserably). The album is a limited edition vinyl record, which includes a custom soundtrack featuring collaborations with BLACK MOSES, OFFICERS, KARIMA FRANCIS, SAM FORREST (nine black alps), MAXIM (prodigy), ED LAURIE, PAUL FRYER, CHARLOTTE CHURCH, DOUG TIELL, and IAN PICKERING (sneaker pimps). My Sonic Youth is available for pre-order for delivery on or before 12th December.

This solo exhibition is the LA debut for one of the UK’s most significant post YBA artists, Stuart Semple. In My Sonic Youth, Semple uses painting, sculpture, and installation to explore social concepts in addition to dissecting the psychological evolution of youth culture over the course of several decades. The artist illustrates how spaces, communication, and music have changed drastically, forcing a generation of young people into a new kind of isolation. Heavily inspired by the music of his own youth, Semple uses references from music and art history to construct a fluid visual narrative, which tells the tale of a radical social and emotional shift among youth culture.

MY SONIC YOUTH is on view through January 9th. See link below for the full article.

Fabien Castanier Gallery would like to thank Hunger TV for featuring Stuart Semple’s artist interview. MY SONIC YOUTH is the LA debut for one of the UK’s most significant post YBA artists, Stuart Semple. See link below for the full interview.

He is best known for his paintings, which present an emotive and sociological perspective on mass culture. In My Sonic Youth, Semple uses painting, sculpture, and installation to explore social concepts in addition to dissecting the psychological evolution of youth culture over the course of several decades. • Miaz Brothers Solo Exhibition in Bogotá

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present Antimatter Series: Timeless, a solo exhibition by the Miaz Brothers. Timeless is an extension of the artists’ Antimatter Series which will once again focus on the artists’ unique form of portraiture. This exhibition will also mark the grand opening of the gallery’s second location in Bogotá, Colombia.

The Miaz Brothers offer a profound new take on conventional portrait painting. The Italian siblings work in tandem using layers of aerosol paint to create ghost-like canvases that are antithetical to the classical portrayal of the lone figure. The Antimatter Series, as their body of work is known, has incorporated a diverse range of subjects. The two installments of the series exhibited in Timeless are both haunting and ethereal representations of familiar faces, the first being the “Masters” series that utilizes figures from the Renaissance and other old world paintings. The second set is the latest by the artists – the “Friends” series – which includes more contemporary subjects.

In the “Friends” series the artists have transitioned to a monochromatic tonal palette, which pays homage to traditional black and white photography. However in contrast to photographic portraits, the Miaz Brothers venture to render an unsharpened image, a mere suggestion of the sitter’s form. As for the “Masters” series, the artists apply the same blurred technique with muted tones of blue, green, and brown to create dark extrapolations of Renaissance portrait paintings.

The brothers employ contextual titles as well as subtle changes in color and form to explore notions of perception rather than representation. The paintings are made up of a fragile haze of aerosol paint, layered to create only ideas of any human likeness and setting. By making such evasive portraits without portraying a real representation, the artists present the viewer with an exercise in memory and subjective understanding. The Miaz Brothers create paintings that defy epochs and activate the present viewer, allowing the audience to contemplate, as the artists suggest, “the transitory nature of existence”.

Opening reception with the Artists Thursday, Nov 5th from 7-10pm. The show will be on view at the gallery’s second location through November 28th.

  • Mark Jenkins in the News

Fabien Castanier Gallery would like to thank Bizarre Beyond Belief and We Heart for additional features on Mark Jenkins Still Life. In Still Life Jenkins presents an all-new body of work created here in Los Angeles. The collection features an evocative series of site- specific installations, including three-dimensional canvases, incorporated taxidermy, a human birdhouse and anthropomorphic stringed instruments. Akin to traditional notions of the “still life,” his sculptures capture moments that conjure their own realities, presenting tableaus that challenge one’s sense of what is real and what is not. Jenkins constructs his people, animals, children – entities commonly filled with life – into inanimate objects, frozen in bizarre postures and scenarios. By creating these unconventional situations, he re-contextualizes commonplace ideas or things and inserts them into a new landscape in which the viewer plays an integral part.

The show has been extended through October 17th.

  • Stuart Semple, MY SONIC YOUTH

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present My Sonic Youth, the LA debut for one of the UK’s most significant post YBA artists, Stuart Semple. Semple will take over Fabien Castanier Gallery in Culver City this October with a series of new controversial artworks.

Following a traumatic near death experience as a teenager studying fine art in the English countryside, Semple has gone on to exhibit in over 15 solo exhibitions internationally in China, Italy, London and NYC. He is best known for his paintings, which present an emotive and sociological perspective on mass culture. Heavily inspired by the music of his own youth, Semple uses references from music and art history to construct a fluid visual narrative, which tells the tale of a radical social and emotional shift among youth culture.

This densely woven chronicle of generational displacement takes form in My Sonic Youth through several large-scale paintings, 3d stereogram prints, large format wallpapers, fun house distortion mirrors, large collage works on paper and sculptures. The exhibition will also be accompanied with a limited edition vinyl record, which will include a custom soundtrack featuring collaborations with several musicians. Proceeds from the vinyl sales will go to charity.

“In the tangled web of the anti-social Internet we are all responsible for ‘brand me’… All our friends are beautiful, all their lives are perfect and if we don’t project the same we are worthless. Ironically with this ability to self-direct a fluid and fluctuating image comes a catastrophic resignation of true self-control. The more loved the distorted public persona becomes the more lonely and empty our private reality becomes. In the process of losing our self, we sacrificed our physical connections, exchanging them for a manipulated distorted digital link to other fictions.” –Stuart Semple

The opening reception with the artist will take place on Saturday October 24th from 6:00 -9:00 pm. Contact the gallery for more info.

  • Mark Jenkins’ Still Life, a Solo Exhibition

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present Still Life, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Mark Jenkins and the first solo show for the artist at the gallery. Mark Jenkins is a sculptor and installation artist whose work focuses on a variety of urban and social themes, re-defining the limits of sculpture both in the public sphere, where many of his pieces have been found, to the more intimate realm of the “White Cube.” The foundation of his artwork is in the artist’s specific technique, casting objects as well as his own body (and those of others) using conventional packing tape and plastic wrap. Encompassing the actual form of these subjects with his method, he has materialized a range of characters, from translucent ducks, dogs and babies, to his most well-known clothed hyper-realistic figures.

In Still Life Jenkins presents an all-new body of work created here in Los Angeles. The collection features an evocative series of site- specific installations, including three-dimensional canvases, incorporated taxidermy, a human birdhouse and anthropomorphic stringed instruments. • Speedy Graphito’s Artificial Paradise, Exhibition Extended

Speedy Graphito’s solo exhibition Artificial Paradise has been extended until Saturday, June 13th.

Speedy Graphito returns to Los Angeles for his first solo exhibition of 2015, presenting new work which takes a critical look at contemporary consumer culture. Commercialism coupled with images of pop cultural icons have remained constant themes throughout Speedy Graphito’s artistic repertoire, however in his new body of work, the artist shifts his creative focus to representations of advertising. By deconstructing and collaging familiar images, Speedy confronts advertising’s unfiltered philosophy.

From the artist: “Presented as the temple of consumerism, this exhibition reveals the hidden faces of advertising and highlights their manipulative power. Hypnotic and powerful brands are decrypted to give us the freedom to break this addiction.” Beautiful women paired with Coke cans, iPods, and designer logos all work in tandem to reflect the multitude of ways in which advertisers have a hold on our subconscious – various fragmented reflections of what and whom we desire based on our consumer impulses.

For this exhibition, Speedy Graphito, as a classically trained painter, uses his skills to create a consumerist utopia. Presenting a simulacrum of artificial images, canonical in our modern society, he re-contextualizes these motifs into a veritable explosion of logos, mascots, slogans, and contemporary paraphernalia. This newest visual landscape presents the most striking exploration of “image overdose”. He proposes, “If the world is a self-representation, we are what we think we see.” His new work will include multimedia pieces, paintings, film, sculpture and large-scale installations.

  • Opening This Weekend, Luke Newton: OFF THE SHELF

Please join us this weekend, Saturday, April 4th for the opening of OFF THE SHELF.  OFF THE SHELF is a solo exhibition by Luke Newton, a young British artist currently living and working in Paris. This show will be his debut solo exhibition in the United States. The exhibit will include new works by Newton and several large scale installations.

OFF THE SHELF presents a lighthearted satirical assessment of what it is to live in a commercially and technologically driven society. Newton recalls DuChamp with his use of appropriation to unshackle factory made utilitarian wares into hand-made pieces of art. Taking these everyday items and ideas on which we depend, Newton re- makes them into sleek vibrant artworks, devoid of functionality. He disconnects these pieces from their intended roles, inflates their aesthetic value, and places them in a gallery context to be consumed and reflected upon. For this exhibition, Newton decomposes precedent in order to create a new visual dialect, specific to a demographic dependent on digital form. By taking imagery from our collective history and combining it with digital symbolism, the artist has created his own vision of conceptual expression. Through a variety of mediums, he supersizes and re-contextualizes the things that make-up our modern lives. Everything from e-cigarettes, shopping carts, iPads, and hashtags are all reborn as paintings, sculptures and mixed media objects made from non-traditional materials. By reorganizing the roles of these everyday articles, Luke Newton sparks a subversive yet important conversation about the things we own and how they define us.

The opening reception with the artist is THIS Saturday, April 4th from 6-9pm. We hope to see you there!
